Profile

Xuefeng Wang is currently an associate professor in planning in the Department of Urban Planning and Design at Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University, Suzhou. Before moving to Suzhou, he had worked as a planning professional in China and the UK for many years. He moved back to academia in 2007 and has since been involved in teaching and research in planning and human geography. His research interests focus on urban and regional development, concerning the spatial patterns of urbanisation and their relations to the growth mode of economies, including questions of spatial planning and the concepts and theory of governance of urbanisation and regional development.

Research interests
- Xuefeng’s research interests focus on urban and regional development, concerning the spatial patterns of urbanisation and their relations to the growth mode of economies, including questions of spatial planning and with the concepts and theory of governance of urbanisation and regional development. This leads to two strands of work.
- The first is concerned with the concept and theory of the spatial pattern of urbanisation in the context of the new industrial development powered by innovation and technological advancement. Specifically, this work seeks to question and develop our understandings of relations between spatial patterns of urbanisation and structural change of industrialisation, the rapid emerging of new industries such as e-commerce, cultural and creative industries, and knowledge economy.
- The second strand of work focuses upon the evolving concept of governance of uneven development. This work specifically examines the institutional settings and policy (includes spatial planning) in the regional, national, and international context. In particular, this research seeks to question and widen our understandings of the relations between institutions and policy and the movement of labour and capital.
- The research builds upon close policy and institutional engagement and has informed local and regional urban development, governance, and policy for regional, national, and international institutions.
