Sam has worked as an English Language tutor since 2005, teaching in Poland, Spain and the UK. From 2008 to 2019, Sam worked in the UK Higher Education sector, teaching EAP in Cardiff University, Newcastle University and Durham University, before moving to Suzhou in November 2019.Sam holds a BA in English Literature and an MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL, both from Newcastle University. His principle area of research has focused on improving EAP students’ use of subject-specific lexis with personalised corpora.
In his role as a director on the XJTLU Pre-sessional programme, Sam has worked on creating a blended online curriculum preparing students for postgraduate study. He is currently investigating the effects of transitioning to an online learning environment on several aspects of EAP. These include how expectations of online learning affect student performance, how listening materials can be exploited in online courses, and how an online peer review process can assist students in achieving assessment criteria.
