October through December 1996

12-2-96 "Debbie, I cannot believe I am actually talking to someone who adores the man as much as I do. I found Joe Montana (in the) Superbowl game with the Miami Dolphins way back in the early 80's. He took off his helmet, and I was sold. I am originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania. I came to Australia on vacation 20 years ago, met my husband Joe and have two children - Regina, age 19, and Joseph, age 16. My place of employment is Australian Catholic University, Strathfield, New South Wales, Australia. My private office has its' own wall paper--Joe Montana. His life-size wall hangings are all over the office, same on my refrigerator at home. Also, my mother sent me a video of an hour-long special of Joe. I play it daily. My bosses know that when they enter my office, they bow to Joe, then they get their work done! "The greatest quarterback to ever walk the face of the earth." That is my saying about Joe. Now that I have him on the Internet, I can place his photo (the one with the 4 Superbowl rings) on the screen daily while I do my work. When Joe decided to play with Kansas City, I was hurt because George Seifert traded Joe for Steve Young. Now that Steve keeps getting injured and Seifert is calling on Elvis Grbac, NOW Steve knows what it is like to 'look over your shoulder' all the time. The second best words in the American English Language are "Montana to Rice - Touchdown!" In my opinion, the first best words are "Oh say can you see." After he built up Kansas City loyalty to the game and then retired, I was devastated. Absolutely devastated. I will always watch the football (we get it here each Tuesday night for 3 hours, recapping the Sunday and Monday football games). But it comes on the tv at 11 p.m. and too late for me to stay up. So I tape it and watch my 3 hours of football through the week. My passion is GONE. I now watch all the games for interest--but no passion. No quarterback can give me the passion as watching Joe throw to Jerry. His arms in the air signaling touchdown. Well, Debbie, I could go on and on forever, but won't. Hope to talk with you when you have the opportunity. Tell me a little about yourself, where you are from and how you came to love Joe. Enjoyed talking to you friend. Regards," Lillian C. Budwee "p.s. Who else has an entire state named after him?"

Lillian, I am so happy to hear from you! I felt the same way you did when Joe retired. But I'm happy he was able to retire without being seriously injured again. I try to look at his retirement from (1.) Jennifer's point of view: She's got her hands full with raising the kids, and I'd want my hubby home with me all in one piece. (2.) Joe's point of view: Surgeries are pain. Joe's had more than his share of them. I had to have bone graft surgery in my foot when it didn't heal right from a broken foot three years ago. I'm ok now, but it still hurts from time to time. Based on that, I can only imagine how Joe feels. I think it's time for Joe to kick back and enjoy life now. (But I DO miss watching him play football.) Thanks for the wonderful email, and watch out for those great white sharks!

12-1-96 "Hello - I just landed on your page and am going back to really dig around - but it looks like you've put a lot of work into it. Thank you! I grew up a 49er and Joe Montana fan, but I have been out of the country and out of it for a while. So - now I am trying to catch up. :) Thanks again for all the hard work." Lizette Beard

Thanks for the compliments, Lizette. Keep checking back from time to time - I try to update the site often.

12-1-96 "Some guys at work had a question about his last season in college. The debate is whether he started every game or not. Can you help? Since he was drafted in the 3rd round, this might have been the case. Thanks," Harold.

Hi, Harold. Thanks for the email. Ok, let's see. According to the book "Beckett - Great Sports Heroes: Joe Montana," here's the stats:

1. In 1975, Joe started only 3 games against Michigan State, USC, and Navy. 2. In 1976, Joe missed the season due to injury. 3. In 1977, Joe started 9 games against Michigan State, Army, USC, Navy, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Air Force, Miami, and finally against Texas in the Cotton Bowl. 4. In 1978, his last season in college, Joe started every game. His stats were:

GAME ATT. COMP. INT. YDS. TDS. RESULT
Missouri 28 13 2 151 0 L 3-0
Michigan 29 16 2 192 1 L 28-14
Purdue 11 7 2 95 0 W 10-16
Michigan State 12 6 0 149 0 W 29-25
Pittsburgh 25 15 0 218 2 W 26-17
Air Force 24 13 0 193 2 W 38-15
Miami 20 12 1 175 0 W 20-0

TOTALS 260 141 9 2,010 10 N/A
Houston (Cotton Bowl) 34 13 3 163 1 W 35-34

Hope this helps, Harold. Tell the guys that for winning this bet, you should get a six-pack of your favorite brew! Keep in touch!

11-30-96 "Debbie - You have a great web page! I enjoy reading the letters from other fans too! Joe is a big part of our family-- in fact, we named our daughter after him. Her name is Tana Jo. (I wanted to name her Montana Jo, but my husband thought that was a little much. Anyway, I was wondering how I could get an autographed picture of Joe for my daughter's baby book. Do you have any ideas. Does he answer requests like that? Thanks for doing a great job on his homepage. Jeri Kendall, Orlando, FL

Jeri, I love it! I'm just as bad, I named my son Paul for Paul McCartney (but that was before I became a die-hard Montana fan). I have no idea whether Joe answers requests like that, but what the hey! I'll email you the address to IMG. Thanks for the compliments!

11-30-96 "You did one hell of a page!!!!!! I'm a rabid collector of anything having to do with Joe and I'm not just a kid--I'm a lady of 48 and have been collecting for about 15 years. Once again--Job well done. Thanks," - Suzanne Catrufus

Thank you, Suzanne!

11-29-96 "WOW! Wonderful page. What can I say? He has done it all. I just happened to be at one of his and Jerry`s best days. It was in Atlanta. To put it short, he threw 5 touchdowns to him. I have a photo I took before the game and would like you to see it. I had to take some photographers out of it and added a little bit more. You see, if you ever saw him play in person before the game, when he would come out onto the field it, photographers would surround him. I`ve been his fan since about 1980, and if you do have his mailing address or email address, I would just like to leave him a note to thank him for all the memories. Thanks much," Dan.

Dan, I'd love to see your photo! If you can get it scanned, please attach it via email, and with your permission, I'll post it on the photo gallery page. Let me know.

11-28-96 "This is a wonderful site. It brought tears to our eyes. We love Joe as does our cousin. Thank you thank you thank you for bringing us the most wonderful quaterback in all history. There will never be another like our Joe - we will love him always. Obsessive? Maybe, but how can we help ourselves? Can you e-mail us the address for Joe please. Thank you very much. Bye-Bye," Sherry and Laura Rouse, Sheffield Lake, Ohio

Thanks for the compliments. I'll email you his address at IMG. Take care.

11-28-96 "Debbie, My name is Robin, and I've been a 49ers fan ever since I started watching football. The main reason was because Joe Montana was on that team!!! I was wondering if you knew his e-mail address and would be willing to send it to me. By the way, I think your website is cool!!! THANX !!!" A Fellow 49ers Fan, Robin Bhalla

Robin, good to hear from you. Thanks for the nice comments.

11-26-96 "WOW I just found your pages on Joe Montana, and it is something else. I absolutely love Joe Montana. When he retired I was so upset. I taped his last game and will never tape over it. Also, when there was a picture in the paper from his retirement speech I cut out a picture of myself and taped it on wishing it were me standing next to him. Jennifer must be one of the luckiest ladies ever. Could you imagine being married to him? We can all dream. Anyway fabulous pages keep up the good work." Valerie from Pennsylvania.

Thanks for the kind words, Valerie.

11-26-96 "I love your page on Joe I'm glad someone thought of making a page of Joe. I'm a big fan of Joe's and even though he retired I still collect all the stuff I can find on him. I was really sorry to see him retire but I guess he had to do it someday. He couldn't play forever. Thanks for letting me look at you web page. Hope to see more of it in the future. Thanks a lot," Tambra Keiser

Tambra, I bet you have a terrific collection of memorabilia. I just had to create a page for Joe to thank him for all the great years he gave to the game and to his fans. The latest addition to my Montana collection is the "nerf like" football that Mervyn's Department Stores gave away to the first 500 people entering there store this weekend. I was visiting in Ukiah, California, and I stood out in the 40 degree cold from 6 a.m. until the doors opened at 7 a.m. The funny part about it all, I wasn't alone, not by a long shot. Ukiah, which is above San Francisco, is BIG time 49er Country. The line for Joe's football went around the building and down the street. I was very glad I got there when I did. By the time the doors opened at 7 a.m., there were at least 500 people in line. I'm sure there were a lot of unhappy campers. Anyway, take care!

11-25-96 "You have put together a great Joe Montana Page. I really enyoyed browsing through it. I'm an original SF Joe fan, living just north of SF. Just wanted to say "good job." - Tom Davis

Thanks, Tom!

11-23-96 "Debbie, Very impressive photo collection. I've a 49er fan since "The Catch" in 1980 (I was 8 years old then). I was wondering, do you know how I could email or write to Joe Montana? Best regards," - Mark Ruegsegger.

Mark, I'll send you his address via Email. And, ahh, I won't tell you how old I was when he made The Catch, ok? Let's just say I was of legal age! :)

11-23-96 "Hello, I just visited your Joe Montana web page. From a die hard 49er and Joe Montana fan . . . it's awesome! What a great way to pay tribute to the greatest QB to play the game. I look forward to any updates you may come across. Keep up the good work." - Aric in Riverside, CA.

Hi Aric! You're in my neck of the woods. Thanks so much for the kind words. It's easy to have a great site when your site is about the Greatest Quarterback ever!

11-21-96 "Hello. I saw your awesome Internet home page! I am a MAJOR Chiefs fan! I went to Wal-Mart and paid $6.95 for a Joe Montana Starting Lineup figurine. His 1995 retirement edition! It's worth $75! Your fellow Chiefs fan," - Dustin Cantrell

Geez! Why is it that when it's my payday, I never find these deals? Congrats, Dustin!

11-17-96 "Debbie, I am writing to you because I recently came across your web site and was impressed by your page on Joe Montana. To be totally honest with you, I have not been a huge fan of Joe until recently. I met the woman of my dreams, and she is infatuated with him. I know that he probably has women that dream about him every day. My girlfriend will be my wife someday in the next five years. We have talked about it and know that it will happen. I would somehow like to see if there is anyway to get Joe involved in this in any way. Even if I can only get a photo or poster, I would love to be able to do something special for her. She has this strange belief that if we name our first boy after Joe that we will show up at the baptism. John Jurkawich (spelling?) recently of the Green Bay Packers did just that when a couple named their child after him. Now I know that there is no comparison between Joe and John, but if I can accomplish anything, I can again show her how much she means to me. I will pass along your Web address to her and let her drool for herself. Although, I am pretty sure that I have seen most of those pictures in posters, books or something else she has up on her walls. If you have any address or info that I could possibly search that might help me, I would greatly appreciate any help you could give. Again, great job on the tribute to Joe. If you know of any other sites we could check out together, please let me know. Take care and have a wonderful day." - Michael McGovern, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Michael, your fiancee has good taste - and I am referring to you! You sound like a wonderful guy, just like my husband. And he's a keeper! I'll email you the address. This may sound a bit out of line, but if per chance you find out Joe will come to the baptism, please invite me too. I'll stand in the back and you won't even know I'm there. Thank you so much for the kind words. I wish you and your wife-to-be many, many years of happiness.

11-17-96 "Dear Debbie, Hi, my name is Cindy. I found your Joe Montana pages. I really liked them. I am a big fan of his too. I have a Joe Montana collection consisting of various items. Thank you for taking your time and effort to build such a tribute to the greatest quarterback in NFL history. I would like to hear back from you," - Cindy Cdoo.

Hi Cindy! I'd love to know what you have in your Montana collection. I bet it's terrific! I wish I had gotten more things when they were available. Oh well, live and learn. Take care!

11-14-96 "Debbie, WOW! What a wonderful job you have done. This is without a doubt the best web site I have ever visited. I am a huge Montana fan!! Thanks for putting all these beautiful pictures together. What a wonderful tribute to Joe. I met Joe in the Bahamas in February of 1996. He was in the same casino I was, playing blackjack. My knees actually knocked when I first saw him!! God, you talk about gorgeous!!! Anyway, after he was finished playing, he came over and introduced himself and then signed autographs for all four of us in my group. He was extremely nice. Where can I write to him now? Thanks, Debbie. You should be extremely proud of the work you have done - it is beautiful!! I hope Joe visits the site. Take care, Thanks again," - Sandra Graybeal

Hi Sandra! How I envy you! I try every year to have Joe be part of my Health and Safety Fair at the hospital where I work. Unfortunately, his schedule never permitted it. But I keep trying. My biggest dream is to someday meet Joe, and ask him (and Jennifer, if she'd do it) if he would please be photographed with me and my husband. Joe has been such an inspiration in my life, and I know it sounds corny, and just believing in him saying "Never Give Up" has helped me through some dark times in my life. Your best bet in getting in touch with him is to write to his personal agent, and I'll email you the address. Let me know when you hear from Joe. Hugs and good thoughts!

11-10-96 "Debbie, I really like your page dedicated to Joe Montana. I can't believe all of the pictures you have acquired. I copied some of them to take to work and use as wall paper. One suggestion if possible it would be nice to be able to turn off the music. I'm still working with Win 3.1 at home and it complains about it each time I return from a picture. Also if there was some way to do a next to see the next picture that would be great. You should feel good about the job you did on this. I spent 2 hours looking at it. Thanks." - Jodi Emtman.

Thanks, Jodi. If you have downloaded the plugin for Crescendo, you should get an icon that is a controller for the music, and you can turn off the music by clicking on the "square."

11-9-96 "Thanks for the great website. I have been a Joe Montana since his days at Notre Dame. When he left the 49ers, it was the second saddest day of my life. The first being the day he retired, I literally cried. I have tried to collect anything and everything related to Joe and the 49'ers that I can possibly get. If you could let me know how to contact his manager so I can get an autograph I would really appreciate it. Thanks for having a great site for all of us Joe Montana fans. Thanks again!"- baja (Jason Kinser)

Hi Jason! I'll email you the address and cross my fingers for you! Keep in touch!

11-8-96 "I loved your Joe Montana page. The pictures are grrrrreat! I just think that Joe Montana is the man! I have been a fan of his for a long time and I have to say that he was the main reason that I watched pro football. He is sooooo hot and you had some awesome pictures. You did a great job." - WWW.

Thank you so much!

10-29-96 "I used to work about 90+ hours a week in Marin County; and a friend who lived across the street from my shop one day coerced me to take a break, and watch some football. I had been around a lot of players, wanted to play pro myself at one time; and as a child, regularly watched the old-time 49ers practice a few miles from where I was raised, at St. Mary's College. Anyway, I hadn't spent much time following football for a few years, and here I was suddenly, watching a young guy named Joe Montana relieve Steve Deberg against the Green Bay Packers. I couldn't help but rave about his accuracy and touch on every pass -- or his resourcefulness . . . but even more I was amazed not just at his focus and ability to perpetually avoid making mistakes: even in the beginning, it was obvious Joe Montana was gifted to almost always make IDEAL decisions. After the game, I stayed to celebrate over a few beers; and my friend, almost objecting to my praise, asked, "Hey, you really like that guy don't you?" It was the first time I had ever watched Joe Montana; but Joe was a subject of STUDY: and I replied, "Mark my words: Don't be surprised if that guy ends up being the greatest quarterback EVER." Truth is, perfection is impossible to improve upon. Praise to you for your great Web site . . . The world wouldn't be 'right' without it." - Mike Montagne

I just LOVE stories like yours. We knew talent when we saw it, didn't we? Mike, your comments make me smile. Thank you so much!

10-27-96 "Really a great page!! The best page I ever saw on the net regarding Joe Montana. A great tribute to this great man. Thanks from a great 49ers fan." Luca Mancinelli, Milan - Italy

Luca, you email proves that Joe's talent is appreciated world wide. Thanks for the email!

10-24-96 "Great Montana page! Thought that your page was a great tribute to the Greatest QB that ever played the game. Sorry that he retired; but he gave us many years of great games to remember him by. Hope he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame the first year he is eligible. I assume that the 49ers will retire his "16" soon. Thanks for sharing some great pix," - M. Jansen.

Thank you for the compliments.

10-24-96 "Hi There, I'll submit your site (to Excite), for review, if you take that "Go Chiefs" off the bottom of the page! ;) You got it, not a problem. It is a really good site. PS, I'm a Denver fan, so I can't say much... ;) " - Jon Hance

All right! Thanks! By the way, I think the Broncos are cool, too!

10-24-96 "Your webpage is the best thing I have ever seen in my life. It is good to know that other people think that Joe Montana is the best quarterback to ever live. Joe Montana is a god to me, and I am overjoyed that you put this page on the Internet. Thanks, Ryan "the Number One Fan of Joe Montana."

Wow, Ryan, a religion? Hmm . . . Well, most football games ARE on Sundays; however, I'm not sure if that qualifies. But "Number One Fan of Joe?" Sorry, kiddo, that number's taken. You'll have to settle for Number Two, cause I've got the Number One spot! Take Care.

10-23-96 "This is Scott Hudson. I teach middle school at Jefferson County North Middle School. I am doing a project for the class, writing celebrities. I need Joe's fan club address. I have a student that is not pleased with Joe Montana but wants an autograph. Two years ago, my student named Tim Johnson wrote Big Joe a letter and sent two of his most precious football cards to have him sign. Well, Tim never got them back and no autograph, either. If you could pull some strings? If you can't pull any strings, could Email me to let me know what we can do to get Joe's autograph? Thanks." - Scott Hudson.

Hi Scott! You should have gotten my Email with Joe's agency address to you. I wish I could pull strings for you, but I'm just a fan myself. I'm sure Joe will send him an autographed photo if you explain everything like you did to me. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Keep in touch and let me know how it turns out, ok?

10-20-96 "Hi Deb! A "Web Buddie" sent me the URL for your site--so I just cruised over to see it--you see, I also am a big "Joe" fan, as I've been a 49er fan since during the "lean" years at Kezar Stadium. I must say that yours is the best tribute to "The Man" that I have seen so far, and I would like your permission to set up a link to this page from the 49er page I'm constructing . . . if you agree. I will need to know what you would like me to call the link. And you will see it there within 24 hrs after I hear from you. My humble page is located at http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/9609/index.html. If you decide to visit me, please keep in mind that it is still under construction and not everything works there yet. Thank you for putting up such an awesome "Joe" page. I truly enjoyed seeing it." - Datubes.

I would love to be linked to your page. Thanks! I'm sure your page will be outstanding!

10-18-96 "Hi! I know you don't know me, and I don't know you. But, I found your page through Yahoo. I took the Joe Montana link. Joe Montana is my favorite player (or was). I really liked your page. It was one of the best pages I've ever seen. My name is Joel Cooper, and I'm 14. Just thought I'd tell you that your page is cool :)" - Joel Cooper

Joel, I think you're cool, too! Stay in touch!

10-18-96 "I wanted to just say that I am also a Montana fanatic. For sure the best q-back of all time. Marino is also my #2. I love the game of football, but I lost a lot when The Great One retired. If you know of any other Joe spots, please send them to me (or catalogs, or anything else, please let me know). Thanks." - Patric Ryan

Yes, Patric, I have to agree. If you want to find more Joe links, keep checking back. I'm going to be creating a link page to other Joe spots on the web.

10-17-96 "Hi, my name is Jack Lacy. I am from Tyler, TX. I am also a Huge Montana Fan. I have his Rookie Football card and about 200 more. I have pictures and other things. Is it ok to use this page as a link to my home page? I'm not as good at making a home page as you did. I am a 49er fan but became a Chiefs fan after Joe moved. Thanks for your time. My homepage is http://www.gower.net/jacklacy. Thanks again. Bye." - Jack Lacy

Hi, Jack! Sure, I'd be honored to be linked to your page. I'll be checking out your web site soon. Take care.

10-13-96 "I think this is a great page. Joe Montana is my favorite player. I am a 49ers fan, not Chiefs. I still like it. He is the greatest player ever along with Jerry Rice. Must go. Thanks." - John Allen

Thanks for the compliment. (The Niners are my second favorite team, by the way.)

10-10-96 "My first visit to your page and it is great! Have you thought of doing a Marcus Allen page? Thank you so much for all of the effort it must have taken to do such a great job" - Mary Dark.

Thanks, Mary. You really can't have a bad page when you have an excellent topic, if you get my drift.

10-5-96 "I am a BIG BIG MONTANA fan in N.C. and I love your page!! It truly is a tribute to this fine athlete. I have never seen anything like it on the web. It is now my new start page! Your web design is breathtaking and your skills are par none!!!! Keep up the great work! GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" - Scott Hunt.

Thanks, Scott! Also, check out Charlie Harrison's Chiefs page - the link is on the Photo Gallery page. Take care.

10-1-96 "Just a note to say thanks for the beautiful site. I'm a big Joe (and bigger Chiefs) fan, and this site is one of the best I've seen. I'm in the process of building my own page and would like to offer your site as a link if possible. Thanks," Jamie Crane.

I'd be honored to be linked to your site. Thank you!
